How To Liven Up Your Living Room Fireplace

Now that we’re getting closer and closer to the hot summer days, most families are switching from the fireplace to the air conditioner. As a result, the area around the fireplace seems to get left behind in terms of decorating. You have to remember, though, the fireplace will remain an integral focal point in the living room, even if you are no longer using it. But just how are you supposed to improve its appearance? Keep reading for some simple tips on how to liven up a living room fireplace.

Keep It Clean

I can’t stress enough just how important it is to keep your fireplace clean. If it still has a pile of ash and charred logs from the last time it was used, take a few minutes to sweep it out. Allowing charred debris to remain in your fireplace sends the wrong impression about your living room. In addition, some of the charred ashes sitting inside your fireplace could blow out onto the carpet, creating stains that are painstakingly difficult to remove.

Balance The Outside

If you look at examples of well-decorated modern-day fireplaces, you’ll probably notice a similar theme – nearly all of them are decorated with similar-sized accessories or furnishings on the outside. This is done to both accentuate the fireplace and to balance the decor. Some of the decorative items you can use on the outside of your fireplace include plants, flowers, statues, tall vases or similar “unique” accessories. The key thing to remember is that both sides need to somewhat mirror one another. Giving one side a tall statue and the other side a short flower will create an unbalanced appearance that affects the entire living room.

Of course, you also can’t overlook the fireplace mantle. Singe most fireplaces sit low to the ground, the mantle will be closer to eye-level than the actual fireplace; therefore, it’s essential that you take the time to properly decorate it. There are literally hundreds of different ways you can approach this task. From sitting (not hanging) a painting or mirror up against the mantle, to using candles, frames pictures and other small accessories.

When you are choosing decorative accessories for the fireplace mantle, try to keep them uniform with and centered around a specific theme or color palette. This is a general rule that you should follow with all types of decorating, but it’s especially important for the fireplace mantle. Maintaining a single theme throughout your mantle will allow for a more cohesive decor, and that’s what your primary goal should be
